MOANALUA

Moanalua attendees prioritized discussing: (1) cost of living; (2) crime/public safety/homelessness; and (3) government reform. Within cost of living, attendees expressed concerns regarding taxes, ratio of income to rent, food costs, affordable housing, and insurance. Reducing taxes (such as on food and medicine) was the highest rated policy to lower the cost of living. The audience had the opportunity to suggest a tax credit, and most responses related to home ownership, businesses, medication, property, kupuna, and hotels. Forty-five percent of participants have considered leaving Hawaii for more affordable cost of living elsewhere. Thirty-six percent have considered leaving Hawaii based on the tax rate. Homelessness and traffic safety ranked highest among the public safety concerns. Fifty-eight percent of respondents believe that government funding for homelessness should be spent on mental health and drug treatment facilities. Term limits ranked highest among government reform concerns, followed by reducing the power of legislative committee chairs.
