MILILANI
The first topic that Mililani attendees wanted to discuss was the high cost of living where taxes, food prices, and the cost of housing were of greatest concern. Attendees weighed in that a reduction in taxes followed by reducing the cost of basic utilities could remediate the high cost of living. Nearly half of attendees shared that "buying less" or "shopping off island or online" was the answer to offset high costs in the islands. Next, attendees determined that crime and public safety was an area to be discussed. Homelessness, tougher penalties for offenders and mental illness was at the top of mind. Forty-four percent of participants agreed that the State should take the lead in addressing the issue of homelessness followed by the County. Results also showed that most agree that increased oversight and accountability in the justice system is needed to improve public safety. Finally, attendees voted that the top priority for government reform would be to reduce the power of the legislative committee chairs.
