HAWAII KAI
At top of mind in Hawaii Kai, attendees wanted to discuss crime, public safety, and homelessness. Nearly half of those who voted on which approach should be the to priority to improve public safety said that tougher penalties for repeat offenders was needed followed by
addressing the root causes of homelessness. Over half of voters shared that they would "very unwilling" to support higher taxes to fund solutions for homelessness. Unlike Mililani, voters determined that the City and County should take the lead in addressing homelessness followed by the State. Next on the list was the cost of living where voting showed a near tie that both reducing taxes and more affordable housing solution were important policies that would reduce the cost of living. Interestingly, voters shared that when their budget is tight, the first things to go is funding a vacation followed by eating out. Finally, Hawaii Kai attendees wanted to talk about government reform. They shared the following ranking for the priority of government reforms measure: 1) Reducing the power of the legislative committee chairs; 2) Term limits; 3) Campaign spending; 4) Year-round legislature; and finally, 5) Fiscal notes. One thing of great concern was the fact that nearly three-quarters of the attendees do not feel adequately informed about how legislators vote on bills, the legislative process, how to get involved, and etc.
